Gateway Science Museum Presents A Forest Journey and Nature’s Numbers
Explore trees of the North State in a whole new way with the latest exhibits at the Gateway Science Museum. Opening September 10, A Forest Journey and Nature’s Numbers will help visitors explore the world of trees and math in nature.
A Forest Journey is inspired by the Harvard classic, A Forest Journey: The Role of Wood in the Development of Civilization by science writer John Perlin. A Forest Journey features interactive exhibits exploring how people, animals, and trees all depend on each other for survival. Visitors will discover the four types of forests found on our planet, uncover how trees are used in products we use every day, and learn about the types of medicine derived from different species of trees.
Nature’s Numbers gives visitors firsthand experiences investigating the presence of math in nature. The pattern of spots on your dog, the delicate symmetry of butterfly wings, and the ruggedness of a coastline all involve math. This playful, hands-on exhibit lets visitors discover geometry in snowflakes, explore logarithmic spirals in seashells, and touch textured patterns, demonstrating that math can be felt and not just seen.
A Forest Journey and Nature’s Numbers are exhibitions developed and produced by The Franklin Institute.
