Aerial Dance is a sub-genre of modern dance, and involves apparatus attached to a ceiling or building, allowing performers to explore space in three-dimensions. The apparatus has it's own motion and limitations, changing the way a dancer must move.
An example of aerial modern dance are the site-specific works of Project Bandaloop, a professional aerial dance company, based in San Francisco. In 2006, Chico-based conceptual artist, Amaera BayLaurel, staged an aerial dance, featuring three dancers, on 80-foot high grain silos on a rice farm outside of Chico. BayLaurel received an Annie Art Award for choreography of "Silo Salutation," which combines rock-climing techniques with yoga and dance.
Enjoy watching the video documentary of Silo Salutation, and feel free to join in a 30-45 minute discussion about conceptual art, site-specific work, grant-writing, aerial dance, and public art, "exactly and approximately."
Refreshments will be served. $7-15 suggested donation, with 100% of the proceeds to benefit the Youth "Art of Yoga" Action (YAYA) Project, teaching art and yoga to high risk and incarcerated teen-age girls.
