Master of Fine Arts Exhibition

Still Point in the Turning World

Jennie Yates

Folded Circle Graph (detail), folded paper on panel, 95 x 190 in., 2008

About her work, Ms. Yates says: "My work is based on mark-making. The process of mark-making, and the significance of the mark, itself, are paramount. The folding of the paper with a bone folder is more subtle in result - the action is more of a focus, and the evidence is quieter, and because of the texture that results, more textural and palpable."

Wednesday, December 3:

Artist talk, 5 - 5:30 PM

Reception, 5:30 - 7 PM

August 28 - September 21

This group exhibition features 3 artists from the Sacramento area who each pursue an organic and biomorphic approach to abstraction. Their artworks transform the natural appearance of their subjects, giving visual form to non-visual ideas and expressions. Artworks courtesy of JayJay, a contemporary gallery located in Sacramento, California.

Thursday, September 4: Beth Jones and Lynda Jolley, JayJay co-owners, will give an informal gallery talk at 5 PM on September 4, followed by a reception.

Ansel Adams (1902 - 1984) is the legendary photographer and environmentalist best known for his visionary landscape photographs, particularly those taken in California's Yosemite Valley. Adams' work transcended mere documentation: he pioneered the idea of previsualizing what the print should look like, based upon a desire to communicate his feelings about the actual scene. Alison Jaques, granddaughter of Ansel Adams and a Chico State alum (BS, Business '83), has graciously loaned the photographs on view in Nature & Spirit.

Special events - four presentations will take place Thursday evenings during the exhibition:

Michael Adams - Ansel Adams, A Son's Perspective, Oct. 2, 5 PM, Trinity 100, followed by a reception at the University Art Gallery, 6 - 8 PM

Byron Wolfe - Yosemite and Beyond: Revisiting Ansel Adams' Singular Vision, Oct. 9, 5 PM, Trinity 100

Tom Patton - In Context: Ansel Adams and the American Landscape, Oct. 16. 5 PM, Ayres 201

Linda Connor - LANDSCAPE: the Ground for Many Things, Oct. 23, 5 PM, Ayres 201
