The inspiration for my work comes from years of climbing, skiing and living in the wild places of the west. My work is about lichen and rock, frigid wind and warm pools of sunlight; and trees, always trees.

My most successful paintings surprise me. While grounded in direct contact with nature, such as landscapes and people in action, it is when I experience a sudden lift beyond analysis and rationality that I am most excited about image making. Perhaps ninety percent of what I do as an artist consists of “plodding,” experimenting (often unsuccessfully) with the medium, or simply practicing skills in drawing, laying in color, and composition. Yet, upon occasion, and sometimes when I least expect it, visual poetry begins to materialize on a canvas and then I work as in a trance, reminding myself to stop before I ruin the image.

Photography drew me in with its ability to make an impact on my visual and mental perspective. That is why I became a photographer. Inviting my audience to have that same experience is what I attempt to do with my work. Photography allows me to thoroughly investigate a single moment of life in great detail. I work with digital photography and enjoy printing large-scale images and using strong contrast in an attempt to send a powerful visual message. When a photograph of mine compels a viewer to reconsider or change the way he/she thinks about or views a particular subject, then I consider it to be successful. |
